It’s Time to Drop Shot

The cold weather, steady cold winds, suspending fish and deep water

fishing mean it’s time to drop shot to find that trophy bass on Guntersville. There’s never been a presentation that allows you to easily keep your bait in the strike zone in deep winter fishing than the drop shot technique. It doesn’t matter if your fishing 10 feet or 30 feet deep, if the wind is blowing or it’s 10 degrees out; fishing a drop shot allows you to easily work a bait in all the different winter weather conditions.

The best part of the drop shot presentation is it catches fish, and you can be bundled up in warm clothes, gloves and the like. You see the drop shot rig is set up with a bottom hanging weight; that you can change the leader length to adjust to the depth of the suspending fish. You can fish a small worm like a finesse worm, you can rig it wacky style and all you have to do is jig it to give it some movement. Your bait is continual in the strike zone and you are just effortlessly giving it movement over the side of your boat. The key to it is fishing where the fish are, so one thing I always do is locate the fish on my depth finder while fishing a drop shot. You don’t always know if there is bass down there but if

you get in the strike zone you’ll find out. So locate the fish, get an idea of the depth, set your leader for the depth and drop that bait down

then slowly jig the bait for movement.

When fish are suspending over deep cover I promise you that this technique will put bass in the boat in the coldest winter conditions. Come fish with me, I’ll put a drop shot rig in your hands and watch you catch fish.
