Increase the Size of your Treble Hooks I know over time we have all said “how can I miss a fish on treble hooks,” well I’m here to tell you that it happens more than not. One-way to prevent this is to super-size the treble hook on your favorite crank baits by at least twice the size of the factory hooks. Rattle baits are probably one of the worst offenders of lost fish, and one thing I always do is to increase the size of the back treble hook. I have found that it affects a rattle bait in two ways; one it gives the rattle bait a little more action and two it allows for some of those short hits to catch fish. Over the last few years’ bass fishing has become a big advocate of jigging spoons, the vertical presentation has become a great fish catcher. The bigger the treble on a jigging spoon the better and deeper the penetration of the hook. I have found as most bass fisherman that a jigging spoon generally gets hit on the drop and with the bigger treble falling the better the hook set and the more fish you catch. There are many shallow running crank-bait types out there and this time of year we are all using them; a big fish is extremely hard to hook with the small treble that they come with. Most of the time I upsize the rear treble, they have a tendency to catch each other some but I believe it is worth upsizing over the inconvenience of the hooks catching each other. Lastly the increase of size allows for more bite when struck by a bass; it provides for better hook-sets for the fisherman and definitely gives you a deeper penetration into the hard mouth of a big fish.
